Things Said By Others

Here are some reviews, good and bad. All are presented without permission.

2011 Demo CS

Terminal Escape:  Sometimes it's hard living in San Francisco. It seems like I have to have a new favorite local band just about every damn week. Conveniently, the guitarist for my last favorite local band [Synthetic ID] also has a hand in this new juggernaut. HUNTING PARTY are mean and frustrated hardcore punk, steeped in internally driven and intelligent '90s hardcore. Members of MIGRAINE, VACCUUM, ECOLI, YADOKAI,FACE THE RAIL, DESOLATION, SYNTHETIC ID and plenty of others. No rules, no convenient subgenres, just ugly. Four songs, all awesome.

Hot Dog Dayz:  Hailing from Oakland, CA is the latest entry into the rapidly paced, high turnover rate that is the new Bay Area bands schedule. As is the modus operandi in hardcore, Hunting Party is made up of members from a million other bands—Vacuum, Face The Rail, and Ecoli, to name a few. The tunes are near frenzied but never spinning out of control. It’s good and heavy on the bass and drums, while the guitars keep along nicely; stepping to center stage for a few tics once in a while but never wanking. The vocals are really rad. The singer reminds me of a punkier Matt Pike. Except here it’s gargled, lower pitched, and more prevalent in the mix than High On Fire, and with a hint of nasal discharge. Shaun Dean—of Cold Sweat and Men’s Interest, among others— is another name that comes to mind as far as comparisons go. I realize those are two completely different vocalists, but whatever, I hear both on here. Someone said this reminds them of “‘90s hardcore” or something. When I think of ‘90s hardcore I think of basketball shorts and New Balance running shoes. But this is not that…at all.  Dig it.

Sub Rosa With Whispered Pacts 7"

Also Mariam Bastani, Robert Collins, Dan Goetz, Greg Harvester, Kevin Manion, and Martin Sorrondeguy put the record in their Top 10s for that issue. They also all listed the title as Red Summer EP. That works too.

Still Single:  There’s always something to say about modern hardcore punk records, and it’s usually along one of two lines: “It’s OK/not great” or “this sounds exactly like [insert name of one of the few bands that ever got it right].” The former usually comes out of a band trying to temper an approach with some new ideas. Bay Area five-piece Hunting Party seems to fall somewhere in between those two lines of thought. This evokes the ‘90s more than these folks might like to admit, with attempts to extend angry HC past the anger into something a bit more abstract, but falls flat on delivery, at least as far as this release is concerned. “Straight Shooter” bends a Flag-style confusion riff into a mantra as the drums fall out and you start to wonder if your copy has a skip in it, but the combination of esoteric lyrics and somewhat non-committal musicianship leaves me with little desire to go back and revisit. Live, I’m told they have a wall of amps that drives it all home, but you’d never know that from here, unless you deciphered that it is the reason why the drums were captured so muddily. Better luck next time.  (Doug Mosurock)

Yellow Green Red: Word on the street is that Hunting Party are the new hardcore band you gotta catch live – I’m sure whatever Chaos In Tejas gigs they’re playing (they must be playing Chaos, right?) will be well attended. With that in mind, my first spin of Sub Rosa With Whispered Pacts wasn’t quite the down-tuned tour de force I was expecting, but after a few times around my turntable, I’m enjoying Hunting Party for what they are: a gruff, heavy hardcore band. They mainly remind me of Deathreat, Pollution or Dead & Gone – hardcore that crusty patch-wearing types have claimed ownership of, along with the nerdy record-collecting elite (and that’s not to mention that design-wise, Hunting Party use all the right fonts, and even sport an attractive, classic circle-shaped punk logo). They never quite reach blasting speed, but always keep it pummeling with the aid of what’s gotta be at least two stacks per guitarist, and a vocalist who barks not unlike Alston of Walls. Solid, gimmick-free hardcore like this will never do me wrong.
